This is ideal self catering holiday accommodation for anyone who loves the peace and tranquillity of lush green Scottish hills and valleys with grazing farm animals. Located very close to Dere Street, the Southern Upland Way, the Four Abbeys Way, St Cuthbert’s Way, and the Pennines our holiday home is a hill walker’s paradise: just put on your boots and step out of the door. There are trails for mountain biking; Roman ruins for exploring; rivers for fishing; nature for enjoying and wide open space for getting away from it all. The historic Border Abbey towns of Kelso and Jedburgh are within 9 miles, each with numerous attractions, and good shopping.

In addition to a couple of games of cricket, football, rugby or croquet on the lawn, bird spotting in the large garden and a barbecue by the Kale Water (unfenced) or lazing in a chair at the summerhouses there are numerous activities and local attractions within easy reach, summer or winter ......

Local information is in the house ready for your arrival along with Ordnance Survey maps on the walls.

ANCESTRY – Search your Scottish Ancestry locally. There is now a Heritage centre in Hawick specialising in local ancestral tourism. Only 30 minutes drive from the house.

 

Antiques: All Border Towns have shops at competitive prices where you can bargain hunt.

 

Beaches: Scremerston and Northumbrian Coast . For wide unspoiled beaches – fantastic!

 

BIRD WATCHING /Bird Sanctuaries: Farne Islands , Holy Island . Puffins, guillemots, gannets, terns, kittiwakes, and grey seals. Also Bass Rock. (biggest gannet colony in UK ), May Island . DRIVING/CAR HIRE: This should be arranged at either the Airport or the Station; preferably on arrival in the country.  Driving is on the left side and sign posting is very good in Scotland . FISHING Tweed and Teviot River Beats: The Tweed claims the longest season of any salmon river in the UK . 1st Feb-30 Nov. Salmon Trout and Grayling are all excellent in our rivers. Also many trout lochs.

PEACE, QUIET and SERENITY- not an activity as such BUT in Hownam you can find the time and space to be alone and yourself.

PEOPLE – meeting locals. This is a valley with village and farming communities. Hownam has a Church, and a Village Hall. Locals are very helpful and polite. All they ask is that you respect their traditions and the Country Code. (closing gates that you walk through, well behaved dogs, leave no litter). You will be made welcome at Church and any community functions.
